3 Days Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour

3 Days Fes to Marrakech desert tour via Atlas Mountains, Ziz Valley, Merzouga dunes, camel trek, desert camp, and scenic stops along the way.

Desert Tour From Fes to Marrakech

  • Traveling between Fes and Marrakech offers one of the most scenic routes in Morocco. This three-day desert journey connects the cultural heart of the country with the legendary Sahara dunes, passing through mountain landscapes, historic towns, deep valleys, and ancient kasbahs along the way. Starting in Fes, the road heads south across the Middle Atlas Mountains, where alpine-style villages and cedar forests create a striking contrast with the desert landscapes that follow. Gradually, fertile valleys filled with palm trees replace the mountain scenery as the route approaches the edge of the Sahara.

Near the village of Merzouga, towering sand dunes rise from the horizon. Here, travelers experience camel trekking across the dunes, an unforgettable sunset over the Sahara, and a peaceful night in a desert camp under a sky filled with stars. The journey continues westward through dramatic gorges, traditional markets, fossil towns, and historic villages built from earthen clay. Crossing the High Atlas Mountains via winding passes eventually leads to the lively city of Marrakech. In only three days, this route reveals many of Morocco’s most remarkable landscapes and cultural highlights.

1

Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Midelt – Merzouga

The first stop of the day is Ifrane, a small mountain town known for its alpine-style architecture, tidy streets, and cool climate. Due to its winter snowfall and European-style buildings, many visitors refer to it as the Switzerland of Morocco. The road then continues to the cedar forests near Azrou, home to groups of Barbary macaques that live freely among the trees. Visitors often take time here to walk through the forest and observe the monkeys in their natural surroundings.

Continuing through the Middle Atlas Mountains, the route passes through Midelt, where there is time to stop for lunch before continuing the drive south. In the afternoon, the scenery begins to change as the road descends toward the Ziz Valley, a vast oasis lined with thousands of palm trees stretching along the river.

By late afternoon, the desert village of Merzouga appears at the edge of the Sahara. Here the journey continues with a camel ride across the dunes of Erg Chebbi. As the camels move slowly through the sand, the sunset colors transform the desert landscape. After arriving at the desert camp hidden among the dunes, dinner will be served under the open sky. Later in the evening, traditional music is often played around the campfire while travelers enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the Sahara.

Day 2: Merzouga – Rissani – Tinghir – Dades Valley

Morning in the desert begins early for those wishing to see the sunrise over the dunes. Watching the first light spread across the Sahara is one of the most memorable moments of the trip. After breakfast, you return to Merzouga village by camel, where your driver will be waiting to continue the journey. The next stop is Rissani, once the capital of the Tafilalet region and still known for its traditional market. The local souk remains an important gathering place where traders from surrounding villages sell spices, dates, textiles, and livestock.

The road then leads to Erfoud, a town famous for its fossil workshops. Here, ancient marine fossils found in the surrounding desert are polished and transformed into decorative stone pieces. Later, the route continues through palm groves and small villages until reaching the dramatic Todra Gorge. Towering rock walls rise hundreds of meters on both sides of a narrow canyon carved by the river. Visitors often enjoy walking through the gorge and admiring the impressive cliffs. After a lunch break nearby, the journey continues toward Dades Valley, passing through the town of Boumalne Dades. Along the way, stops are made to admire the unusual rock formations known as the Monkey Fingers and to enjoy panoramic views across the valley.

Day 3: Dades Valley – Skoura – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

The Tour continues west toward the Rose Valley, located near the town of Kalaat M’Gouna. Each spring, the region celebrates the harvest of fragrant roses used to produce oils, perfumes, and cosmetic products. The route then passes through the palm-filled oasis of Skoura, where historic kasbahs appear among thousands of date palms. Soon afterward, the road reaches Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the desert. The city is known for its film studios where several international movies and television productions have been filmed.

A short drive later leads to the famous Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, an ancient fortified village constructed from earthen clay. The final stage of the trip crosses the High Atlas Mountains via the winding Tizi n’Tichka Pass, offering sweeping views across mountain landscapes and small Berber villages. Arrival in Marrakech takes place later in the afternoon or early evening. Your driver will transfer you to the airport or your accommodation, marking the end of your three-day journey from Fes to the Sahara and Marrakech.
