2 Days Fes to Merzouga Sahara Desert Tour

2 Days Fes to Merzouga Sahara desert tour with Atlas Mountains views, camel trek, sunset over dunes, and overnight stay in a desert camp.

Fes to Merzouga Sahara Desert Tour

  • For travelers staying in Fes who wish to see the Sahara but have limited time, this two-day journey offers an unforgettable introduction to Morocco’s desert landscapes. In just a short period, the route travels through mountain towns, cedar forests, fertile valleys, and finally the sweeping dunes of the Sahara. The road from Fes leads through the Middle Atlas Mountains where scenery changes quickly from alpine-style villages to dense forests where Barbary macaques live freely.

Continuing south, the landscape opens into wide valleys lined with palm groves and dramatic desert views. By late afternoon, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise from the horizon near the village of Merzouga. Here, a camel ride across the sand brings you to a desert camp hidden among the dunes. As evening falls, the quiet atmosphere of the Sahara, the changing colors of sunset, and the clear star-filled sky create a moment many travelers consider the highlight of their time in Morocco.

Day 1: Fes – Ziz Valley – Merzouga

Early in the morning, your driver will collect you from your accommodation in Fes to begin the journey south toward the Sahara. The first stop is Ifrane, a mountain town known for its European-style buildings, tidy streets, and cool climate. Because of its architecture and winter snowfall, many visitors compare it to alpine towns in Europe. A short drive later brings you to the cedar forests near Azrou, home to groups of Barbary macaques that roam freely among the trees. Visitors often pause here to watch the monkeys and walk through the peaceful forest surroundings.

Continuing through the Middle Atlas Mountains, the road leads toward Midelt and then descends toward the impressive Ziz Valley. From several viewpoints, you can admire the long stretch of palm groves that follow the river through the desert landscape. By late afternoon, the desert village of Merzouga appears at the edge of the Sahara. Here the adventure continues with a camel ride across the dunes of Erg Chebbi. As you travel deeper into the desert, the colors of the sand shift with the setting sun. After reaching the camp hidden among the dunes, dinner will be served under the open sky. Later in the evening, local hosts often play traditional music around the fire while the stars shine clearly above the desert.

Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Return to Fes

Morning in the Sahara begins early for those who wish to watch the sunrise over the dunes. As daylight slowly spreads across the desert, the sand changes color in a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. After breakfast at the camp, return to the village of Merzouga by camel where your driver will be waiting. The journey back to Fes follows the same scenic route through valleys and mountain landscapes. Several stops may be made along the way to stretch, enjoy the scenery, and take photos of the impressive views across the Middle Atlas region. Arrival in Fes is expected in the late afternoon or evening, where you will be transferred to your accommodation, marking the end of your two-day Sahara experience.
